Manners

Y2K9s offers the AKC CGC and the S.T.A.R. Puppy Programs.

Y2K9s is proud to offer these two AKC programs: Canine Good Citizen (CGC) and the S.T.A.R Puppy tests. The CGC test is offered as a separate class twice a year, usually in the spring and fall. The S.T.A.R. Puppy tests are offered in the following classes:

  • Our Saturday Morning Puppy Preschool (puppies from 8 to 16 weeks). You may enter this class at any time; you do not need to wait for a session to begin. It allows you to start your puppy training almost immediately. You are eligible for six sessions and on the last class of your session, the S.T.A.R. test is administered for your puppy
  • The Puppy S.T.A.R.S. Preschool class (for puppies from 16 weeks to 8 months)
  • In any of our Basic Canine Manners class (for any dog who is up to one year old) if the student requests this at the beginning of a session
  • Y2K9s offers the AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test during most session breaks during the year, and offers a CGC/Therapy Prep class usually twice a year – in the spring and fall
  • Both of these tests – CGC and S.T.A.R. Puppy – are optional.

We welcome new students! Please be sure to review our Class Info and Policies. Thank you!

Puppy Preschool

For pups from 8-16 weeks of age, this class addresses issues specific to young puppies as well as teaching very basic good behaviors. Coming when called and not jumping up are emphasized. The AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy test will be offered at the end of your session for your puppy.

Note: You do not have to wait for a new session to start Puppy Preschool. You can start during any week and your six-week session will begin with your first class. This six week session must be completed within seven weeks of your start date.

This seven week session is designed for puppies between 16 weeks and 8 months old and their people. It provides socialization and basic training opportunities, as well as addresses issues that arise as young pups grow. At the end of the seven-week session, the class instructor, an AKC Approved CGC (Canine Good Citizen) evaluator, will offer the AKC S.T.A.R Puppy test. Puppies who successfully complete the test are eligible to receive the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Medal (for display or memento purposes; not suitable as a collar tag), and puppy and handler will be listed in the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy records. In addition, each will receive the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy package that includes a handsome, frameable certificate; AKC Puppy Handbook; and AKC monthly email newsletter. To learn more about the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy program visit www.akc.org/starpuppy.

Basic Canine Manners

For dogs 4 months and older. Dogs and owners will be introduced to using a clicker and other methods of positive reinforcement based training. This class teaches basic good manners, including but not limited to polite greeting, loose lead walking, sit, down, stay, and coming when called. How to address minor problematic behaviors such as jumping, chewing, taking objects, and barking will be covered as needed. If requested at the start of a session by a student, the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy test can be offered at the end of your session for dogs under one year of age.

Prerequisite: None

Please note:

  • On the first day of class, please bring proof of current dog inoculations to class.
  • The methods we use for dog training calls for a lot of food reward. Bring a large supply of small, tasty treats.
  • Four to six foot leads and a buckle collar are recommended. Please, no Flexi Leads. We may recommend the use of an alternate head halter or harness; they are available for sale at class.
  • Family members are encouraged to attend: small children are welcome if they are not disruptive. On the first night of Basic Canine Manners there are no dogs in class. It is an introductory session best enjoyed without dogs.
