Joyce Smuda, CNWI, AKC Scent Work Judge

Joyce has been involved in dog sports since the early 1990’s, training and handling her own Labradors Retrievers and Pembroke Welsh Corgis to titles within multiple disciplines. With a foundation in Obedience and Breed, she branched into new sports as they became available; Herding, Agility, Rally Obedience, K9 Nosework, Hunt Work, Tracking, and Parkour. The experience gained from cross-training different breeds allows her a unique insight into behavior, motivation, and limitations that each brings to a performance.

The philosophy is to keep training positive and fun, no matter where a dog is in its career. People get involved in different dog sports to spend time with their companions and that love is a key component to a performance. Class exercises should enhance and challenge each team while keeping things simple for motivation and drive.

Joyce has been with Y2K9s since the early start of the club and is a Certified NoseWork instructor with the NACSW and an AKC Scent Work Judge. She attends weekly classes as well as seminars with the founding K9NW Instructors, Tracking clubs, Herders, and Breed Handlers to expand on education. Currently she has three dogs successfully competing in multiple dog sports. Aside from teaching K9 Nosework classes, she also offers private instruction for Agility, Obedience, and Manners.
