Muscles and bones - or how to move your dog

A webinar with Tim Lewis, PhD

All it takes to move a dog is motivation, right? And perhaps some food so the dog has energy to move. Well, then some oxygen to burn the food, blood to move the food and oxygen in, waste products out. That’s all the behind-the-scenes crew for the star actors: muscles and bones. In this presentation we will look at how muscles work, and what’s going wrong when they don’t. You can’t talk muscles and ignore the bones. In this presentation, Dr. Lewis will go beyond structure to how bone facilitate movement, and what can go wrong. He says, “You’ll walk away from this seminar with a better understanding of the biology of movement including some practical applications for you and your dog.” The seminar will also be available via Zoom.

Tim Lewis approaches canine research through the lens of an evolutionary ecologist. With a PhD in Wildlife Ecology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Tim taught for two decades at Wittenberg University in Ohio where he was an award-winning Professor of Biology. He is now a Professor of Biology at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota where his classes include ecology, evolution, mammalian ecology, and forest biology. Dogs have shared the Lewis household for years, and Tim taught a semester class completely built around dog biology for university students and friends of dogs. His research ranges across many species, including wolves, deer, squirrels, turtles and, of course, dogs. He has presented findings of his research in journals, at conferences, and as an invited speaker for more than 30 years. Tim hovers on the edges of the dog agility and canine freestyle worlds with his wife, Ruth, who teaches and competes in those sports. His book, Biology of Dogs: From Gonads Through Guts to Ganglia, was published by Dogwise Publishing. Copies will be available at the event for purchase and signing.

Going Out on a Limb: The canine skeleton and the muscles that move it

A webinar with Tim Lewis, PhD

The skeleton and musculature of your dog can be of particular interest to those involved with canine activities. But even if your dog is a genuine couch potato, not doing much more than sleeping and eating, having some knowledge of what shapes your dog can be valuable. In this webinar, participants will look at the dog skeleton, the joints that connect the bones and allow movement, and the muscles that pull it all together. Working with material from wolves and domestic dogs, as well as dog skulls, we focus on comparative anatomy of canine skulls including domestic dogs, wolves, and foxes, and how skull shape and dental anatomy impacts animal health and well-being. Basic joint anatomy and how different joints function will be explored, as well as how your dogs’ muscles work and what happens when they don’t.

You’re hooked! You, your dog, and the chemically mediated reward system

A webinar with Tim Lewis, PhD

Deep inside our dog’s brains is a chemically mediated reward system triggered by positive reinforcements. The drugs that are created by this system rival street versions of opiates--AND are no less addicting. In this session, we will look into the dog’s brain to see how the built-in reward system works, how it builds the bonds we have with our dogs, and how you can use that knowledge towards more successful interactions with your dogs. In addition, we’ll take a look deep inside our own brains at the human version of the chemically mediated reward system that is triggered by positive reinforcements. You’ll gain insight into how your dog learns to train you, and why you are so addicted to dogs and the canine activities you are involved in.

A Biological Look at the Canine Brain: the good, the bad, and the…squirrel!

A webinar with Tim Lewis, PhD

Using the latest in brain research combined with the wealth of canine behavioral data, this webinar will explore the biological basis of behavior. Topics include brain function, the other brain (the endocrine or hormone system), and what we know about how mammalian brains process information. Participants will gain a better knowledge of the incredibly complicated biological mechanisms that interact with behavior. Knowing what shapes behavior will help participants in their interactions with dogs and the people who live with them.

Canine Body Language

A two-part webinar with Sue Sternberg

Body Language Part 1: What Does “Friendly” Look Like?

What does it mean when we call a dog “friendly”? What, exactly, does “friendliness” look like to humans and to other dogs? Is “friendly “ a way to describe a relaxed greeting? Is “friendly” an action, or a state of mind, or is it a fleeting state or a permanent description? In this webinar, through extensive video footage, Sue Sternberg will explore and define “friendliness” in dogs, both as it applies to humans and also to other dogs.

Body Language Part 2: How to Tell A Dog is Going to Bite, Before He Actually Bites

Sometimes a bite seems to come “out of the blue,” with what seems like no warning. Whether it’s biting another dog or biting a person, in reality dogs give many clues that they are feeling more and more like biting. In this webinar Sue Sternberg will detail, through extensive video footage, the many signs that a dog is getting ready to bite—whether it’s a person or another dog.

About Sue

Sue Sternberg has been involved with canine behavior for more than 3 decades. Her experiences include animal control officer, behavioral consultant at the ASPCA, shelter owner, and teacher of dog trainers. She has been involved with her own dogs in a variety of dog sports including agility, nosework, and musical freestyle. In demand as a speaker and consultant worldwide, Sue’s passion for providing quality of life for dogs in their communities is evident in her Training Wheels® program, her involvement with animal shelters, and her work towards developing protocols for safe adoptions. A Dog’s View of the World

A webinar with Tim Lewis, PhD

Dogs are readily distinguished from people. They not only look different, they evolved quite independently from humans. Like humans, they functioned as pursuit predators living in social groups. Each species, however, developed along very different paths. In this presentation, Dr. Lewis will focus on the ways in which dogs are optimized for a sense of smell, good vision in dim to low light, and hearing in ranges that best detect prey. Because dogs do not experience the world the way we do, learning how their senses differ from ours will help you understand your dog better. This understanding will strengthen your bond and allow for specific adjustments to improve your training and interactions with your dog.

Power of the Pattern:
Using the Control Unleashed Pattern Games

A webinar with Leslie McDevitt

Got a dog that worries about stuff? Or can’t focus on you because of spooky things in the environment? World-renowned Leslie McDevitt will share with you how to quickly and effectively help your dog feel and function better using the Pattern Games from her most recent book Control Unleashed: Reactive to Relaxed.

In this webinar you will learn many variations of Pattern Games and the different contexts in which you can use them. Patterns are a predictable, repetitive set of rules that lower anxiety by telling the dog what to expect and when. They are a way for an anxious dog to control his experience, enabling him to direct his behavior modification by communicating start, stop, or go towards or away from something. Leslie makes these games fun, simple, and confidence-building for participants at both ends of the leash.

A longtime Y2K9s instructor, Leslie McDevitt MLA, CDBC, CPDT-KA is the author of the internationally-acclaimed Control Unleashed series of books and DVDs. Her books have been translated into many languages, and she has helped people all over the world learn how to use her science-based and empowering methods to help companion, performance, and working dogs learn how to functional optimally, without stress, in very challenging environments. Control Unleashed has helped reactive companion dogs on neighborhood walks to highly competitive performance dogs to K9 patrol and detection dogs. Leslie is also proud to be a guest speaker for the Clicker Expo and a consultant for the Penn Vet Working Dog Center.
